The State of Texas Top Legal Officer Takes Legal Action Against Tylenol Manufacturers Concerning Autism Spectrum Allegations

Legal Proceedings
Ken Paxton, a Trump ally campaigning for the United States Senate, claimed the drug companies of concealing the risks of acetaminophen

The top legal official in Texas Paxton is suing the producers of acetaminophen, alleging the firms withheld alleged dangers that the drug posed to pediatric cognitive development.

The lawsuit arrives a month after President Donald Trump publicized an unverified association between using Tylenol - referred to as acetaminophen - throughout gestation and autism in children.

Paxton is filing suit against J&J, which once produced the drug, the sole analgesic approved for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which presently makes it.

In a statement, he said they "betrayed America by making money from suffering and marketing drugs regardless of the risks."

The manufacturer asserts there is insufficient reliable data connecting acetaminophen to autism spectrum disorder.

"These companies deceived for years, deliberately risking numerous people to increase profits," the attorney general, from the Republican party, declared.

The manufacturer commented that it was "deeply concerned by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the reliability of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the health of women and children in America."

On its online platform, the company also said it had "continuously evaluated the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that indicates a established connection between taking acetaminophen and autism."

Groups speaking for medical professionals and health professionals share this view.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has stated acetaminophen - the primary component in acetaminophen - is among limited choices for women during pregnancy to manage pain and fever, which can create major wellness concerns if left untreated.

"In more than two decades of research on the consumption of acetaminophen in gestation, zero credible investigations has conclusively proven that the consumption of acetaminophen in any trimester of pregnancy results in brain development issues in young ones," the organization stated.

The court filing references latest statements from the previous government in asserting the medication is allegedly unsafe.

In recent weeks, the former president generated worry from medical authorities when he told women during pregnancy to "resist strongly" not to consume Tylenol when unwell.

Federal regulators then published an announcement that physicians should consider limiting the consumption of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a direct connection" between the medication and autism in minors has not been proven.

The Health Department head RFK Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in spring to undertake "a massive testing and research effort" that would identify the cause of autism in a short period.

But experts advised that finding a unique factor of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the outcome of a complex mix of inherited and external influences - would prove challenging.

Autism is a category of permanent neurological difference and disability that affects how individuals experience and relate to the environment, and is diagnosed using physician assessments.

In his court filing, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is running for US Senate - alleges the manufacturer and J&J "intentionally overlooked and sought to suppress the evidence" around acetaminophen and autism.

This legal action aims to force the companies "remove any promotional materials" that claims Tylenol is secure for expectant mothers.

This legal action echoes the concerns of a assembly of mothers and fathers of young ones with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who sued the makers of Tylenol in 2022.

The court threw out the case, stating investigations from the parents' expert witnesses was lacking definitive proof.
