The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Investment Giant.

A major resort island located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

The Reported Sale

Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.

The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

Hamilton Island's Scale and Features

Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.

Roughly thirty percent of the land is built upon, including a substantial range of amenities:

• Five separate hotels
• More than 20 restaurants and bars
• 20 retail outlets
• An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
• A marina and a commercial airport

Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.

The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.

The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
