RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
