Government Official States Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been instructed to avoid discussing secret matters in all cars.

Security Advice for Defence Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in all modern cars.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Background

This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and cause chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader defence environment highlights the significance of strong measures and vigilance in every areas of government operations, from vehicle usage to discussions practices.
