Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the initial names in the frame to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on Sunday after the team's ten-game winless start to the top-flight season.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the club - are among the names to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who made more than 100 of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the Wolves board as they begin the search of hiring a new head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a shock appointment given he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham midfielder is out of work meaning the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
