Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Nigerian School

Violent incident at school
Educational institutions in northern Nigeria have often been targeted for armed groups

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a female high school in north-western Nigeria, according to police.

The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.

The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their dormitory, according to a statement.

One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.

Local residents told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.

In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they anticipate and pray for their daughters' safe return.

Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in recent months, with learning centers suffering the most of the violence.
