The declaration regarding a deal expected to result in the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip for more than 24 months has generated joy and relief across Israel.
A group that has advocated for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza expressed âdeep appreciationâ for what it termed a âlandmark achievementâ.
The dealâwhich still must be approved by Israelâs war cabinetâinvolves the return of 20 living hostages as well as the remains of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
To date, 148 hostages have been returnedâlargely through earlier truce agreementsâ51 bodies have been retrieved and eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Joyous gatherings took place in Hostagesâ Square in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals gathered ahead of the deal being signed.
A crowd began clapping and moving to music beneath American and Israeli bannersâone woman displaying a sign that read: âWe adore Trump.â
âItâs a magical day,â she expressed.
A different person, 50-year-old Yael, cried while observing the people celebrating.
âI am thrilledâit is such a comfort,â she said. âWe need to see them come back home to their loved ones.â
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker set off fireworks to mark the announcement that he would be homecoming.
âThey are returning!... Matan is on his way home!â Einav Zangauker said as she held her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the mother of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: âMy son, you are returning home.â
The joy could be felt in the streets in Tel Aviv after the announcement.
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting âLâchaimâ, which means âto lifeâ. She has advocated for the freedom of her companions, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their brother Liran Berman wrote: âMy dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.â
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, and her body recovered from a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has been joining other hostage families in advocating for a deal which ensures the return of everyone still being held within Gaza.
âI hardly believe this is actually happening. We have waited for such a long time and now itâs here,â he expressed.
He stated he felt âbrokenâ that his cousin would not be among those coming back home but was âradiant with happinessâ for the relatives of the hostages who are at last coming back.
Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel along with his brother.
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, remarked she felt like she was living âa dream stateâ.
âWeâre more than grateful to President Trump and all he has done on our behalf. We feel that this could be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan feels closer than before,â she said.
But she cautioned that it remained too soon to celebrate.
âBefore the final captive returns, we wonât open the bubbly. We will continue struggling... until itâs over,â she said.
âNumerous events might occur up to the final instant so this is why we are extremely cautious. We just want to thank everyone who was involved in the efforts and make sure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only when the last captive is safely home.â
Eitan was captured from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israelâs south along with his brother Iair, who was released from detainment in a ceasefire deal earlier in the year.
